The impressive monastery is perched on a cliff, the so-called "Acropolis" of Tyrol, which guards the town of Chiusa.
The monastery is among the oldest monuments in the region; today the place is home to a convent of cloistered Benedictine nuns.
The church of the Madonna, at the bottom of the walls, has a baroque octagonal plan. At the top there is the monastery itself, with two other churches, including Santa Croce, built probably during the late middle Ages and modified first in the XV century and later in the XVII century.
Starting from the city of Chiusa you can reach the monastery of Sabiona within a 45-minutes’ walk, along the Way of the Cross you reach this famous site in just 30 minutes; however the monastery cannot be visited.
